Happy Birthday, Munchkin!

It’s hard to believe my munchkin is already five! How time has flown! Since this year seemed to be the first year he really knew what was going on, I finally bit the bullet and expanded the party beyond our closest family and friends to his little friends from school.

Now every party needs a theme. I asked Keeler what he wanted. He specifically said:

  1. Dragon cake
  2. watermelon
  3. tag

Well, we were able to do two of the three. I found a pattern online for the cake. Not as hard as it looks. Watermelon – yep. Ran out of time for a game of tag.

The cake, sans frosting.

Awaiting wings.

I used tootsie rolls for the claws, icing for the eyes and chocolate chips for the pupils and nostrils. The spine scales were crackers I made earlier this week. The cake was just a basic yellow cake I made from All Recipes and the icing was from a can. Real high tech around here.

One thing I will say, you really have to freeze the cake after assembling, and periodically freeze it while icing to make life a whole ton easier. Less crumbs get into the icing, and the finish is much smoother when you spread it when it is harder.

I had lots of grand ideas for the theme, but in the end, the entertainment was bubbles, coloring pages, blow up swords and paper crowns from Oriental Trading Company, and a garden hose. A pop up tailgate tent from CBear served as the “castle”. Everyone had a great time, and I didn’t have to break the bank to do it. Win for everyone!

We also had everyone bring a canned good instead of presents. Hopefully that helps the kids learn about giving, and less toys around the house here to trip over. We’re going to take them to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

Food wise, again, I kept simple. I made:

  • Fresh fruits and veggies sliced up
  • Cucumber Slices With Dill (since I have a ton of cucumbers and dill to use up!)

  • Confetti salad – a bean salad from my grandma’s recipe collection
  • Bread from the bread maker
  • Ham and PB&J for sandwiches
  • Amish Macaroni Salad (Everyone LOVES this!)

My family brought:

  • Chicken salad sandwiches
  • Orzo salad
  • Strawberry Salad with feta

Munchkin’s actual birthday is this week. I usually take the day off and we do whatever he wants to do, and we go to the toy store and he gets to pick out his own present. I’ll also take him to the food bank to deliver the food we collected. Should be a lovely day! Last year we went to the park and to the movies to see Toy Story 3. This year? Stay tuned!

Preparing for the bunny

We have a few Easter traditions. Yes, we go to church. Yes, we have Easter baskets, but not the boring, every one looks the same. Each year I take the Munchkin to a thrift store and park him in the basket isle and let him pick out his basket for that year. This year he found a lovely basket from Bath & Body Works that was really very manly. It had red leather around the outside with pockets. Very cute!

Our second tradition is this – The Easter Bunny is like Santa. He travels all around the world delivering Easter baskets and gets tired, so you have to build a nest for him to sleep in during his travels. As a thank you, he leaves an Easter basket. This is normally done outside, and of course this year it was a down pour of rain. His buddy was here to help build.

This was their creation. Cute, no? I liked it was also quick. It was wet outside! However, I don’t think they minded. I think they bunny will approve.

To infinity and beyond!

So, the other day I was picking up Munchkin from school. He recently had gotten a new robot toy, and was telling me all about it.

Me: Hey, why don’t we go for a walk with Riley when we get home? You can bring your robot.

M: But he might break!

Me: True, but remember your Buzz Lightyear? You’ve dropped him a million times and he’s still in one piece.

M: Yeah, he is!!!! And he even says it in his movie!!! “Greetings. I am Buzz Lightyear. I come in piece!”

Ahahahhahahaahaha! Kids are great.

Goodnight sweetheart it’s time to go. No really, you gotta go!

I am so tired. Munchkin recently stopped taking naps. This unfortunately means I stopped taking naps too. Boooo. Anyways, he sleeps really heavy now. Great, right? Except he sleeps so hard he doesn’t wake up when he has to go potty.

The past week goes something like this:

8:00 – goodnight to Munchkin

11:00 – I go to bed

Somewhere between 2 and 3 I wake up because I can feel that creepy feeling that someone is staring at me. I keep my eyes closed for just a minute. Maybe if I keep my eyes closed it will all be a dream and I can go back to sleep! Or, maybe not.

Wash kid. Change kid. Change bed. Wash covers. By the time I do this I am wide awake, although tired. After a week of this, I’m ready for a good night sleep tonight. Going to potty five times before bed? Yes. No late night drink? Yes. Hoping for a full night of sleep? YEEESSSSSSSS!

Stir Crazy

The past two days I have been unable to leave my driveway due to an inch of ice that my car just doesn’t want to deal with. Because of this, Munchkin and I got to spend a ton of time together! Yipee! Sadly, it seems he is of the age where he no longer takes naps. My baby boy is growing up (and slightly driving me bonkers).

We read books. We watched movies. We pretended we were super heroes, but it wasn’t cutting it. So, we got out the craft supply box and this month’s Better Homes and Gardens and set to work making a valentine garland. Basically, glued a page with roses all over it to some red construction paper, cut it in strips and made into hearts. Bam! Fun, cheap, and pretty.

On a side note, when I first moved in I thought the electric fireplace was insanely cheesy, but since it got cold, I’ve learned to appreciate it. It also gives me a spot to set out some of my fun trinkets. I guess it can stay for now.

He must really like us

Friday we went to CBear’s house for movie night. On the way over munchkin and I picked up dinner so neither of us had  to actually do any work and cook something because, you know, it’s Friday.

We got there and had a lovely dinner. I had pasta primavera. CBear had Pad Thai and munchkin had mac and cheese. Munchkin was hungry and did a good job eating up all of his bits. I was so proud! We then watched The Emperor’s New Groove before sending Munchkin to sleep in CBear’s bed while we stayed up to watch grown up television. Munchkin settled down and we watched the new Showtime show, Shameless. Side note: It is pretty funny, so if you get cable (I don’t at home) I would suggest it.

When the show was over it was time to head home. I walked into CBear’s room to get munchkin and this awful stench hit me immediately. What is that smell??? I looked at Munchkin and there were a couple of pieces of macaroni strewn about, so I figured it was from dinner and stuck to his clothing. He was on his tummy, so I peaked in his undies to see if he pooped his pants, but they were fine. However, I soon came to the realization that all was not right with the world when I moved him and behold! An entire pile of mac and cheese vomit! ALL over the bed. ALL over the sheets. ALL over Munchkin. ALL over his hair. So gross.

CBear was super nice and said he would clean it up, so I tried to usher Keeler out of the house when he buckled over and his face turned green. Yep, sick again. Luckily this time we made it into a bowl of CBear’s. CBear and I watched on as my poor munchkin threw up in the kitchen.

When we got home I had to wash off Munchkin as he cried and puked some more. I guess bath time isn’t as fun when your tummy hurts.

The following morning I got a text from CBear to let me know everything was saved in the washing machine, and steralized and was clean again. Munchkin followed the text shortly by shoving a bowl of vomit in my face and proclaiming, “Look mommy! I frew up in da bowl! Not in my bed!” Gross.

Surprisingly, we are still invited back at CBear’s house, although I think mac and cheese is off the menu, at least for a little while.
